Benefits of starting and online business

Benefits of starting an online business ideas

Here are five common benefits of starting an online business that may be appealing to a budding online entrepreneur:

  1. Flexibility: One of the biggest benefits of starting an online business is the flexibility it offers. As an online business owner, you have the freedom to set your own schedule and work from anywhere with an internet connection. This means you can work around your other commitments, such as your current job, school or extracurricular activities, and have more control over your time.
  2. Low Start-up Costs: Compared to traditional brick-and-mortar businesses, starting an online business typically requires lower start-up costs. Many online business models, such as dropshipping, affiliate marketing, or digital product creation, don’t require significant upfront investments in inventory, equipment, or physical space. This makes it more accessible for people with limited financial resources to start their own business.
  3. Greater Reach: With an online business, you have the potential to reach customers beyond your local area or even internationally. The internet allows you to connect with customers from all over the world, which means you can tap into a larger market and potentially increase your sales and profits.
  4. Learning Opportunities: Starting and running an online business can be a great learning experience for teenagers. It provides opportunities to develop skills in areas such as marketing, sales, customer service, financial management, and problem-solving. These skills can be valuable not only for the business itself but also for future career opportunities.
  5. Creativity and Passion: Starting an online business allows you to pursue your creativity and passion. You can turn your hobbies, interests, or talents into a business idea and create a brand or product that reflects your unique style or perspective. This can be personally fulfilling and allow you to express yourself while also making money.

It’s important to note that starting and running an online business requires hard work, dedication, and commitment. It’s not always easy, and success may not come overnight. However, with perseverance, strategic planning, and a willingness to learn and adapt, starting an online business can be a fulfilling and rewarding endeavour for anyone who is willing to put in the effort.

Online Business Models to Earn Money Online

Just to keep things simple I am going to break the online businesses into four categories; content creation, e-commerce, e-learning and freelancing. There may be more online business models that you could explore but these are ones that I know work and can thus recommend them from experience.

Feel free to jump to the category that speaks to you more else scroll through all and see which resonates.

Content Creation

Content creation is like being a digital storyteller or artist. It’s about using different tools and platforms, like social media, blogs, or videos, to create and share your own unique content with others online.

Think of it like having your own virtual canvas or stage, where you can express yourself and share your creativity, ideas, and talents with the world. You can create all sorts of things, like writing blog posts, making videos, taking photos, designing graphics, or even producing music. The possibilities are endless!

Content creation also involves planning and organising your ideas, researching, editing, and polishing your work to make it the best it can be. Once you’re happy with your creation, you can share it with others online, and people can like, comment, share, or interact with it in various ways.

Content creation is not just about entertaining others, but also about expressing yourself, sharing your passions, and connecting with others who have similar interests. It’s a way to build a community, make new friends, and even make a positive impact by inspiring or educating others.

So, whether you want to create funny videos, share your thoughts on important topics, showcase your photography skills, or express yourself in any other way, content creation can be a fun and rewarding way to share your voice with the world and make your mark on the digital landscape!

e-Commerce

E-commerce, short for electronic commerce, is a type of business that involves buying and selling products or services over the internet. It’s like having your own online store where you can sell things to customers all around the world.

With e-commerce, businesses can set up a virtual shop on a website or online marketplace, where they can showcase their products or services with descriptions, photos, and prices. Customers can then browse through the online store, select items they want to buy, and make purchases online using various payment methods.

E-commerce allows businesses to reach a wide audience and sell products or services 24/7 without the need for a physical brick-and-mortar store. It offers convenience to customers, as they can shop from the comfort of their own homes and have products delivered to their doorsteps.

E-commerce also involves other aspects like order fulfilment, inventory management, customer service, and online marketing to attract customers and drive sales. It requires businesses to establish secure online payment processes, protect customer information, and comply with legal and regulatory requirements.

E-commerce has become increasingly popular in recent years, and it has opened up new opportunities for businesses and consumers alike. It’s a dynamic and ever-evolving field that continues to shape the way we buy and sell products and services online.

e-Learning

E-learning as a business refers to the use of electronic or online learning methods to provide educational or training services for a fee. E-learning businesses typically create and offer online courses, programs, or resources that are designed to teach specific skills, knowledge, or expertise to learners who are interested in acquiring them.

E-learning businesses can operate in various forms, including:

  1. Online Course Platforms: These businesses create and operate online learning platforms or learning management systems (LMS) that host courses on a wide range of subjects. They may offer courses developed by their own team of instructors, or they may partner with experts or educators who create and sell their courses on the platform.
  2. Content Providers: These businesses create and sell educational content, such as e-books, video tutorials, or interactive learning resources, that can be accessed online. They may focus on specific niches or subjects, and sell their content through their own website or online marketplaces.
  3. Corporate Training Providers: These businesses offer e-learning solutions to corporations and organisations for employee training and development. They may create customised training programs or use existing courses to help companies train their employees on various skills, compliance requirements, or professional development.
  4. Language Learning Platforms: These businesses focus on teaching languages online, offering courses or resources for individuals who want to learn a new language or improve their language skills. They may provide interactive lessons, practice exercises, and assessments to help learners achieve their language learning goals.
  5. Skill Development Platforms: These businesses offer online courses or resources to teach specific skills, such as coding, graphic design, or marketing. They may provide a structured curriculum, practical exercises, and assessments to help learners acquire and improve their skills.
  6. Educational Consultancies: These businesses provide consulting services to educational institutions, organisations, or individuals on e-learning strategies, curriculum development, instructional design, and other aspects of online education. They may help clients create and implement e-learning programs, train instructors, or evaluate the effectiveness of existing e-learning initiatives.

E-learning businesses generate revenue by charging learners for access to their courses or resources, either through one-time payments, subscription models, or other pricing models. They may also generate income through partnerships, sponsorships, or advertising. Like any business, e-learning businesses require careful planning, content creation, marketing efforts, and customer support to be successful.

Freelancing

Freelancing is a way of working where you offer your services to clients or businesses on a project-by-project basis, without being employed by them on a permanent basis. Instead of having a traditional 9-to-5 job, freelancers work independently and are typically self-employed.

As a freelancer, you can offer your skills, expertise, or services in areas such as writing, graphic design, web development, photography, social media management, and many more. You can choose the type of work you want to do, set your own schedule, and decide how much to charge for your services.

Here are some key points to understand about freelancing:

  1. Independence: Freelancers have the freedom to choose their own clients, projects, and work arrangements. They have control over their schedule and can work from anywhere, as long as they have the necessary tools and resources.
  2. Project-based Work: Freelancers typically work on specific projects or assignments for clients, which can vary in length and complexity. Once a project is completed, freelancers may move on to another project or work with a different client.
  3. Self-Employment: As a freelancer, you are considered self-employed, which means you are responsible for managing your own finances, taxes, and other aspects of running a business. This requires keeping track of your income, expenses, and paying taxes on your own.
  4. Client Relationships: Freelancers often need to establish and maintain relationships with clients, who may provide recurring work or referrals for new projects. Building a good reputation and maintaining professionalism is important for freelancers to succeed in their field.
  5. Pricing and Payments: Freelancers determine their own pricing for their services, which can vary depending on their skills, experience, and market demand. Freelancers may charge clients based on hourly rates, fixed project fees, or other pricing models. They are also responsible for invoicing and managing payments from clients.
  6. Skill Development: Freelancing can be an opportunity to hone your skills and gain experience in your chosen field. It allows you to work on different projects with diverse clients, which can help you improve your expertise and expand your portfolio.

Freelancing can be a flexible and rewarding way to work, allowing you to pursue your passions, set your own schedule, and gain valuable experience. However, it also requires self-motivation, time management, and business acumen to succeed as a freelancer.

Now that we have an understanding of the categories, let’s see what online businesses ideas we can start.

Let me just say it upfront, there will be a lot of overlap in reasons, skills and potential income so be prepared for some repetition. Just be sure to see which one as a whole resonates with you most.

e-Commerce

Sell handmade crafts online

Selling handmade crafts online can be a great way to turn your creative hobby into a profitable business. Here are some reasons why you might want to start selling handmade crafts online:

  1. Pursue your passion: Starting an online craft store allows you to turn your passion for crafting into a business.
  2. Flexibility: An online craft store allows you to work from anywhere and at any time, providing you with flexibility and freedom.
  3. Potential for income: You can monetize your online craft store by selling your handmade items, offering custom orders, or teaching workshops.

Skills required:

  1. Crafting skills: You need to have a strong understanding of crafting techniques and be able to create high-quality handmade items.
  2. Marketing skills: You need to be able to market and promote your work effectively to attract customers.
  3. Customer service skills: You need to be able to communicate with customers and meet their needs to provide a positive experience.

Equipment required:

  1. Crafting supplies: You’ll need supplies for your craft, including materials, tools, and packaging.
  2. Photography equipment: You’ll need equipment to take high-quality photos of your handmade items.
  3. Shipping supplies: You’ll need shipping supplies to package and ship your items to customers.

Possible earnings:

The earnings potential of selling handmade crafts online can vary widely depending on the quality of your work, the pricing strategy, and the demand for your items. Many people selling on Etsy have reported earning some $s in the first month and going on to earn a few hundred within a few months. Like a brick and mortar store, this really depends on the amount of work you put in to get the maximum out. I personally have not started an online handcrafted items business as yet.

Start an online store

If you have a passion for selling physical or digital items, starting an online store can be a great way to turn your passion for selling products into a business. Here are some reasons why you might want to start an online store:

  1. Pursue your passion: Starting an online store allows you to turn your passion for a particular product or niche into a business.
  2. Flexibility: Like most online businesses, an online store allows you to work from anywhere and at any time, providing you with flexibility and freedom.
  3. Potential for income: You can monetize your online store by selling your own products, drop shipping products, or promoting affiliate products.

Skills required:

  1. Product knowledge: You need to have a strong understanding of the product you are selling and be able to communicate its value to customers.
  2. Marketing skills: Just like a regular store, you need to be able to market and promote your products effectively to attract customers.
  3. Customer service skills: You need to be able to communicate with customers and meet their needs to provide a positive experience.

Equipment required:

  1. E-commerce platform: You’ll need an e-commerce platform to set up your online store and process payments.
  2. Product inventory: You’ll need to have a source for the products you will be selling.
  3. Shipping supplies: You’ll need shipping supplies to package and ship your products to customers.

Possible earnings:

Just like an outside store, the earnings potential of an online store can vary widely depending on the niche you choose, the quality of your products, and your marketing strategy. The part that sets it apart from the physical store is that if you sell digital products, the opportunity for scale is far easier than with physical products while operating costs are kept to a minimum. If I am to provide a dollar value to how much you can earn, like with many others listed above, you can earn a few hundred dollars to six figures a year.

Start a Drop Shipping Store

Starting a drop shipping store can be a great way to start a business without having to worry about holding inventory, managing fulfilment, or dealing with shipping logistics. Here are some of the key reasons why you might want to start a drop shipping store:

  1. Low startup costs: One of the biggest advantages of drop shipping is that it requires very little upfront investment. You don’t need to purchase inventory in advance or rent a physical storefront. All you need is a website and a few basic tools.
  2. Flexibility: Drop shipping allows you to run your business from anywhere in the world. As long as you have an internet connection, you can manage your store from the comfort of your own home.
  3. Wide range of products: With drop shipping, you have access to a vast range of products without having to invest in inventory. You can sell anything from clothes and electronics to toys and pet supplies.

Skills required:

  1. Marketing and sales skills: To succeed in drop shipping, you need to be able to market your products effectively and close sales. This requires a strong understanding of online marketing and sales techniques.
  2. Website design and development: You’ll need to build a website that looks professional and is optimised for sales. This requires knowledge of web design, user experience, and e-commerce platforms.
  3. Customer service skills: As a drop shipper, you’ll be responsible for handling customer inquiries and managing returns and exchanges. You’ll need strong communication skills and the ability to resolve conflicts.

Equipment required:

  1. Computer: You’ll need a computer with an internet connection to manage your store.
  2. E-commerce platform: You’ll need to choose an e-commerce platform to build your website and manage your orders.
  3. Payment gateway: You’ll need a payment gateway to process transactions on your website.

Possible earnings:

In my experience, the drop shipping business market is a little saturated. You would really need to carve out your niche in order to make a great income in this space these days. That said, it is not impossible to start a drop shipping store and still make six figures but I just find that focusing on an online store is a better option.

Start a Print on Demand Store

Much like a drop shipping store, a print-on-demand store can be a great way to start a business without having to worry about holding inventory, managing fulfilment, or dealing with shipping logistics. Here are some of the key reasons why you might want to start a print-on-demand store:

  1. Low startup costs: One of the biggest advantages of print-on-demand is that it requires very little upfront investment. You don’t need to purchase inventory in advance or rent a physical storefront. All you need is a website and a few basic tools.
  2. Flexibility: Print-on-demand allows you to run your business from anywhere in the world. As long as you have an internet connection, you can manage your store from the comfort of your own home.
  3. Wide range of products: With print-on-demand, you have access to a vast range of products without having to invest in inventory. You can offer custom-designed t-shirts, phone cases, mugs, stickers, and more.

Skills required:

  1. Graphic design skills: To succeed in print-on-demand, you need to be able to create high-quality designs that resonate with your target audience. This requires a strong understanding of graphic design principles and software such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. Or you can use an online platform like Canva.
  2. Marketing and sales skills: You’ll need to be able to market your products effectively and close sales. This requires a strong understanding of online marketing and sales techniques.
  3. Customer service skills: As a print-on-demand store owner, you’ll be responsible for handling customer inquiries and managing returns and exchanges. You’ll need strong communication skills and the ability to resolve conflicts.

Equipment required:

  1. Computer: You’ll need a computer with an internet connection to manage your store.
  2. Graphic design software: You’ll need graphic design software such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator to create designs for your products.
  3. E-commerce platform: You’ll need to choose an e-commerce platform to build your website and manage your orders.

Possible earnings:

With print on demand, I find using it as a supplementary income produces better results than just having a store on its own. An example of this is let’s say you start a blog on stay at home dads. You can then have a store that could sell merchandise branded on your stay at home dad’s blog that people can relate to. By niching down you increase the potential for income for your print on demand store.

Start Buying and Selling Domain Names

Ever fancied becoming a stock broker or a real estate broker but could not handle the stress of the market or the travelling to meet clients in the homes? Well why not consider buying and selling domain names? This can be a lucrative business opportunity for individuals with the right knowledge and expertise. Here are some of the key reasons why you might want to consider buying and selling domain names:

  1. Potential for high profits: Domain names can be sold for thousands or even millions of dollars, depending on their market value and demand.
  2. Low overhead costs: Buying and selling domain names requires very little overhead costs compared to other businesses. You only need to purchase domain names and pay for renewal fees.
  3. Flexibility: Domain name flipping can be done from anywhere in the world, as long as you have an internet connection.

Skills required:

  1. Market research: To succeed in buying and selling domain names, you need to have a strong understanding of the domain name market and the factors that affect domain name values.
  2. Negotiation skills: You need to be able to negotiate effectively to buy domain names at a low price and sell them at a higher price.
  3. Marketing skills: You need to be able to market your domain names effectively to potential buyers and create compelling sales pitches.

Equipment required:

  1. Computer: You’ll need a computer with an internet connection to research and purchase domain names.
  2. Domain registrar account: You’ll need an account with a domain registrar to purchase and manage your domain names.

Possible earnings:

This is quite a specialised field in my opinion. It requires a fair amount of research and strategy to be successful. That said, it can be quite lucrative when done well. Voice.com was sold for $30m dollars while 360.com was bought for $17m. This is not indicative of the normal earnings though. For myself the most I have made from a domain sale is $1500 which is slightly less than the ones listed before.

Start a Curated Box Subscription Service

Starting a curated box subscription can be a great business opportunity for individuals who are passionate about a particular niche and want to share their enthusiasm with others. Here are some of the key reasons why you might want to start selling a curated box subscription:

  1. Recurring revenue: With a subscription model, you can generate recurring revenue and build a loyal customer base.
  2. Low startup costs: Starting a curated box subscription business requires relatively low startup costs compared to other businesses.
  3. Flexibility: You can run your curated box subscription business from anywhere in the world, as long as you have an internet connection.

Skills required:

  1. Niche expertise: To succeed in the curated box subscription business, you need to have a strong understanding of your niche and the products that will appeal to your target audience.
  2. Product sourcing and curation: You need to be able to source high-quality products and curate them into a cohesive and compelling box.
  3. Marketing and sales skills: You need to be able to market your subscription box effectively and close sales.

Equipment required:

  1. Computer: You’ll need a computer with an internet connection to manage your website and orders.
  2. Storage and shipping supplies: You’ll need a space to store your products and shipping supplies to fulfil your orders.

Possible earnings:

For me, I love subscription models. It helps not only to plan your budget better but it is also far better when/if you want to sell your business. A subscription based business model provides a steady stream of income to your business. As long as your product is good you can bank on around 5% or less churn rate of your customers. Rather than having to seek new customers to earn income every month, you instead compound your earnings by adding new subscribers. Curated boxes are becoming a norm these days as people look to save time on not having to search for products anymore but can instead subscribe to your service and have it delivered on a monthly basis. My thoughts, if you are willing to put in the work and have a good box to offer, this can lead to six figures quite quickly.

Online Education

Create an Online Course

Online Education has exploded in recent years, likely spurred on by the lockdowns and work from home culture that came from that. Forecasts are saying that it will be nearing a trillion dollar market by 2030. The good news is that it is not too late for you to become a part of that market. Creating an online course can be a great way to monetize your knowledge and expertise, while also providing value to learners around the world. Here are some reasons why you might want to create an online course:

  1. Share your expertise: Creating an online course allows you to share your knowledge and expertise in a subject that you are passionate about.
  2. Passive income: Once you create and launch your course, you can earn money passively from course sales.

Possible earnings:

The earnings potential of an online course can vary widely depending on the subject you teach, the quality of your course content, and your marketing strategy. It also depends on the purpose of your course – did you create it to make a million dollars or just some cash on the side while passing on the knowledge you have. Setting up an online school and allowing students to subscribe to it can be very lucrative while setting up a course on a platform like udemy might expose you to a larger market but will most likely not make you a millionaire.

Become an Online Tutor

Have a skill that people are struggling with but not quite ready to create your own course? Becoming an online tutor can be a rewarding way to share your knowledge and skills with students all over the world. Here are some reasons why you might want to become an online tutor:

Equipment required:

  1. Reliable internet connection: You’ll need a reliable internet connection to conduct online tutoring sessions.
  2. Audio and video equipment: You’ll need audio and video equipment, such as a microphone and webcam, to communicate with students.
  3. Tutoring platform: You’ll need a platform for conducting online tutoring sessions, such as Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet.

Possible earnings:

The earnings potential of online tutoring can vary widely depending on the subject you teach, your level of expertise, and the number of students you work with. Tutoring is an active work though meaning that in order for you to be paid, you have to do the lesson. This is in contrast to creating an online course where once created, it can earn money for you while you sleep. This would mean that the earning potential lies with two factors; how much you think your knowledge is worth and how much you are willing to work. I know some tutors that do this for some extra pocket money at the end of the month and I also have friends that make 6 figures a year tutoring students.

Become a Personal Trainer

To be clear, here when I refer to becoming an online personal trainer, I am speaking about creating an online fitness program that people can log onto and follow.  One can be a personal trainer offering your services to clients but that would require more of an active role and would, in my view, fall under freelancing which we will touch on later. Here are some reasons to become a – I mean – create an online fitness program;

  1. Flexibility: Online personal training allows you to work from anywhere and at any time, providing you with flexibility and freedom.
  2. Reach a wider audience: Online personal training allows you to gain clients all over the world, giving you the opportunity to reach a wider audience.
  3. Passive income: You can monetize your fitness knowledge by offering online personal training programs to clients all over the world.

Skills required:

  1. Knowledge of fitness: You need to have a strong understanding of exercise science and be able to design effective workout programs for clients.
  2. Communication skills: You need to be able to communicate effectively with clients to provide a positive experience and help them achieve their fitness goals.
  3. Business skills: You need to be able to market your programs effectively and manage the financial aspects of your business.

Keep in mind this is a highly saturated market so unless you offer something different or have a ready market to release it to, you likely will struggle to make good returns on the work you put in.
